CLP Regulation – Revised Rules on Classification, Labeling, and Packaging Enter into Force
The updated Classification, Labeling, and Packaging (CLP) Regulation came into force today. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) encourages companies to review their substance portfolios and update classifications where necessary.
The updated CLP Regulation aims to improve the identification and classification of hazardous chemicals, as well as communication about chemical hazards.
The changes include:
- Clarifying the rules for the classification of mixtures and substances with multiple components;
- Emphasizes the role of grouping in adaptation classification;
- Introduces rules for clearer labeling of hazardous chemicals (including digital labels);
- Provides for certain changes to the information submitted to and published in the classification and labeling inventory;
- Grants The European Commission the right to request proposals for adaptation of classification and labeling from ECHA or the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA);
- Introduces rules regarding the sale of chemicals at filling stations;
- Clarifies the role of distributors as potential duty holders for Poison Center notifications.
Companies should evaluate and review their substance and mixture portfolios and inform ECHA about new classifications.
