European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Adds Five Hazardous Chemicals to Candidate List and Updates One Substance.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added five new chemical substances to the Candidate List for substances of very high concern (SVHC) and updated one substance. With the newly added substances, the list now contains 247 entries.
Some of these substances, which are used in many areas such as lubricants, greases, cosmetics, personal care products, and cleaning products, cover groups of chemical substances, so although the list contains 247 entries, the total number of chemical substances affected is higher. Companies are responsible for managing the risks of these chemicals and providing information to customers and consumers regarding their safe use.
| Substance Name | EC No | CAS No | Reason for Inclusion | Examples of Use |
| 6-[(C10-C13)-alkyl-(branched, unsaturated)-2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl]hexanoic acid | 701-118-1 | 2156592-54-8 | Toxic to the reproductive system (Article 57c) | Lubricants, greases, release agents, and metalworking fluids |
| O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate | 209-909-9 | 597-82-0 | Persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic, PBT (Article 57d) | Lubricants and greases |
| Octamethyltrisiloxane | 203-497-4 | 107-51-7 | Very persistent, very bioaccumulative, vPvB (Article 57e) | Production and/or formulation: cosmetics, personal/health care products, pharmaceuticals, washing and cleaning products, coating and non-metallic surface treatments, and sealants and adhesives |
| Perfluamine | 206-420-2 | 338-83-0 | Very persistent, very bioaccumulative, vPvB (Article 57e) | Manufacture of electrical, electronic, and optical equipment and machinery, and vehicles |
| Reaction mass of: triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives | 421-820-9 | 192268-65-8 | Persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic, PBT (Article 57d) | No active entry |
| Updated Entry | ||||
| Tris(4-nonylphenyl, branched and linear) phosphite | – | – | Endocrine disrupting properties (Article 57(f) – environment) | Polymers, adhesives, sealants, and coatings |
Importers and manufacturers of substances must notify ECHA within six months of the date of inclusion in the list (January 21, 2025) whether their substances contain a Candidate List substance.
Suppliers of Candidate List substances supplied on their own or in mixtures within the EU and EEA must update the safety data sheet they provide to their customers.
Under the Waste Framework Directive, companies must also notify ECHA if the articles they produce contain substances of very high concern at a concentration above 0.1% (by weight). This notification is published in ECHA’s database of substances of concern in products (Substances of Concern in Products-SCIP). Under the EU Ecolabel Regulation, products containing SVHCs cannot be awarded the ecolabel.
