About Hazardous Chemicals Found in Cosmetic Products
In a pilot project conducted by ECHA’s Enforcement Forum, approximately 4,500 cosmetic products were examined in 13 countries between November 2023 and April 2024.
The review found that 6% of the cosmetic products inspected contained Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and hazardous substances banned under REACH regulations. Furthermore, 285 products were found to contain the following hazardous chemicals, the use of which is prohibited in these products:
- Perfluorononyl dimethicone
- Perfluorooctylethyl triethoxysilane
- Perfluorononyl ethyl carboxydecyl PEG-10 dimethicone
- Cyclopentasiloxane (D5), cyclomethicone (mixture of D4, D5, and D6), cyclotetrasiloxane (D4)
The use of these substances in cosmetics is not permitted. Their use is prohibited under the Stockholm Convention on POPs or restricted under the REACH Regulation.
Action has been taken to recall the non-compliant cosmetic product from the market.
