ECHA Identifies Risks from PVC Additives and Microparticle Emissions!!!

A study by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has revealed that certain substances added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, such as plasticizers, may pose risks to humans and the environment. It stated that regulatory action would be necessary to limit the use of these additives and minimize the release of PVC microparticles.

The investigation focused on 63 PVC additives, including plasticizers, heat stabilizers, and flame retardants, and the purpose of the study was stated as follows.

  • minimizing risks associated with plasticizers, particularly certain ortho-phthalates that are harmful to reproduction
  • To minimize risks arising from heat-stabilizing organotins such as DOTE, which may cause developmental malformations and reproductive harm
  • Reduce emissions of flame retardants as recommended in ECHA’s Regulatory Strategy for Flame Retardants
  • Implement and develop technologies that minimize PVC microparticle emissions, particularly in recycling facilities and landfills.

As a result, ECHA‘s investigation was forwarded to The European Commission, which will evaluate it and ECHA to prepare a REACH restriction proposal.
