Restrictions on Lead in PVC Products in European Union Countries.
As of November 29, 2024, if the lead concentration is equal to or greater than 0.1% of the weight of the PVC material, it cannot be used or placed on the market in articles made from vinyl chloride (PVC) polymers or copolymers. This REACH restriction applies to both newly manufactured and imported PVC products, including those made from recycled materials. Some applications, such as products containing recovered flexible PVC, have longer transition periods.
- Although the EU industry moved away from lead stabilizers in PVC many years ago, this restriction strengthens the standards for all PVC products, protecting both human health and the environment.
- Why is this important? Lead is a well-known toxic substance that affects the development of the nervous system in children and increases the risk of kidney disease and high blood pressure. It is also dangerous to aquatic life.
This restriction promotes the safe use of chemicals by addressing one of the end consumer applications of lead.
